Nothing says I love you more than receiving a big and beautiful cock for Valentines Day. Well, hopefully.
Not literally...I of course mean a PEACOCK.
It's official, we are adding to our flock of rescue hens and turkeys by hoping to hatch and rear our own Indian Blue Peacocks.
We've visited a local breeder in Worcestershire to meet these magnificent birds and to ultimately, understand more about what goes into rearing and breeding them.
From Spring, and within 24 hours of being laid, the eggs will be delivered to us and go straight into the incubator for around 28-30 days.
If the cocks done a good job and are fertilised, the eggs will be moved to a hatcher with a higher humidity level and after a day or two the chick's should be able to make their first steps into the world.
Often referred to Peafowl, like everything and everyone on our farm, they will have a part to play.
As great foragers of ticks, termites and other insects, they will assist in natural pest control reducing the need for pesticides that affect soil health for future generations use.
Their eggs also provide a higher level of protein than hen eggs, and specifically the blue eggs provide zinc, calcium and essential amino acids making them a very good source of nutrition.
Weve just got to hope they aren't being delivered by Evri and actually make it alive.
Happy Valentines Day, here's hoping you all receive something as big and beautiful.
Further updates coming soon.
Roots.
Small Farm. Big Dream.
